When I try to insert a slide from file, the thumbnail
images are not shown. Up until about 2 weeks ago, I did
not have this problem when using the powerpoint XP
program. Operating system is Windows 2000.

The following suggestion was made:

I cannot find the: Click on the Views icon in the "Insert
Picture" dialog and select
Thumbnails. Thereafter, the default should be set to
Thumbnails.

I cannot find the views icon as described.

When you select Insert > Picture > Picture from File, a dialog opens that
allows you to locate the picture you want to insert. In that dialog box
look for the Tools icon at the upper right. Next to Tools, if you hover
over the icon that looks like a window, it will say "Views". Click on the
little arrowhead and you will get a drop down menu.

Hello,

In the Insert -> Slides from File dialog, there are two buttons just below
the "Browse" and "Display" buttons, which are unavailable (dimmed) until
after you have chosen which file from which you wish to insert slides.

The left button contains an icon that looks like 3 frames of a film-strip.
This is the button to select if you want to see a row of thumbnails appear
in this dialog.
The right button contains an icon that looks two boxes (one with lines and
one with a square). This is the button to select if you want to see a list
of slide titles and a preview pane which will display a thumbnail when you
select a slide title from the list.

I think I'm still summit lagged. I read that three times and saw "picture
from file". Thanks for cleaning up after me.

Sonia,

I followed your instructions. The thumbnail button was
actually already highlighted. I am still unable to see
the thumbnails when I try to insert slides from file -- I
just see gray boxes. Interestingly, if I click the little
box on the upper right of the insert slide dialogue box
for a list of the slides, I can see the thumbnail of the
slide. When I click the button for the string of slides I
do not see the thumbnail.

Hi John,
I've been trying to help Nancy onsite with this problem.
The problem does NOT lie with those 2 'toggle' buttons.
When the left one is depressed the spaces where the
thumbnails would/should appear stays grey.

Our IT people reloaded Office and the problem still
occurs. They are now suggesting that all her data be
backed up and the system be re-installed. We'd like to
avoid this. Do you have any other suggestions on what to
try?

Thanks,
Martha

Hello Martha,

| avoid this. Do you have any other suggestions on what to
| try?

Sorry, but this is the first time that I've ever heard of ths particular
symptom so I have no idea what the underlying root cause might be.
