missing thumbnails on insert slides from file function

When I try to insert a slide from file, the thumbnail
images are not shown. Up until about 2 weeks ago, I did
not have this problem when using the powerpoint XP
program. Operating system is Windows 2000.
 
Click on the Views icon in the "Insert Picture" dialog and select
Thumbnails. Thereafter, the default should be set to Thumbnails.
