I recently got attacked by malware, and somehow in the process of
removing it i've lost my default XP appearances.... all i have is the
"classic" appearance. Is there anyway i can download these again or fix
this?

thanks in advance.

Make sure that the Themes service is set to Automatic and running.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Themes | Click the V next to Startup type |
Select Automatic | Click the Apply button | Click the Start button |
When the Themes service has started, click OK | Close Services

If that doesn't do it, visit here...

Read the instructions at the top.

One of these ought to help.

187. Restore Themes Functionality

187. Right hand side
Restore Luna Theme

214. Right hand side
Windows XP Style Changes to Windows Classic

271. Stuck in Classic View? Undo Now

-----

If XP Pro you can use Group Policy...
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |

Navigate to >>>

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\
Force Classic Start Menu
Set to: Not Configured

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Desktop Themes\
Load a specific visual style file or force Windows Classic
Set to: Not Configured

The first thing that I did was dump the XP theme for the classic look.. call
me boring if you will, but the performance gain over having overweight task
bars and pastel colours wins for me..

Hi Mike,

I am boring also. ;-)

Classic Start Menu.

Classic Control Panel.

Classic Theme, except for the bliss wallpaper, with a modification.

I copied Bliss.bmp to the Desktop, opened it and Saved As Bliss.JPG.

Bliss.bmp
1.37 MB (1,440,054 bytes)

Bliss.JPG
50.1 KB (51,344 bytes)

I moved Bliss.JPG to C:\windows\web\wallpaper.

I right clicked Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab | Selected Bliss (JPG)
you can tell by the difference between the two by the icons | Apply

I do not see any difference. I deleted the original Bliss.bmp.
