Something weird has happened on my XP (SP3) machine in that the icon that
used to appear in the system tray, allowing me to safely remove and USB
plug-in.

I have tried right-clicking on the drive in 'My computer' but the eject
option is not there.

I have also tried right clicking on the clock in the system tray to see if I
could 'Customize Notifications' but it is greyed out.

I do not have any 'hidden' items in the system tray.

Any ideas welcome!

Thanks,

Noel

I just started an external hard drive. I do not get an icon, just the two
audio notes over the speakers.

Mine came back that way. Since yours didn't, do a Google search on 'safely
remove device icon' and you will find
several methods to restore it.

Right click MyComputer on the desktop.
Click Properties in the popup menu.
Click the Hardware tab > Device Manager button.
Expand "Disk Drives".
Right click on your USB device.
Click Properties in the popup menu.
Click the Policies tab.
Click "Optimize for Performance" to select it if it is not selected.
Click Ok and close out of DM.
Reboot.

Thanks I put the check in 'Optimize for Performance' as it was in 'Optimize
for quick removal'.

However, sadly, I still do not get an icon in the taskbar.

Try this script:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 5. Restore Safely Remove Hardware Icon

Thanks for that the script worked great and the icon is back.

Clever guy that Kelly!
