Missing Sysvol and Netlogon shares after retoring the backup using Windows 2000 Backup tool

I back up my Windows 2000 domain controller's system state to local
drive using Windows 2000 Backup Tool. I depromote the server and
disjoin it from the domain. Then I move the server to my lab that is
disconnected from my network.I use Directory Service Restore Mode to
restore the system update to the server using Windows 2000 Restore
tool. After the reboot, I seize FSMO roles and create DNS. Everything
seems fine except one thing: I don't have SYSVOL and NETLOGON shares
available. Check FRS event log, I got event log error 12540:

The File Replication Service cannot replicate c:\winnt\sysvol\domain
because the pathname of the customer designated staging directory:
c:\winnt\sysvol\staging\domain
is not the fully qualified pathname of an existing, accessible local
directory

I checked the C:\WINNT\Sysvol directory. It has only

c:\WINNT\Sysvol\Domain\Policies and C:\WINNT\Sysvol\scripts folders.
It does not have C:\WINNT\Sysvol\Domain\DO_NOT_REMOVE_NtFrs_PreInstall_Directory.

Other missing folders are:

c:\WINNT\Sysvol\staging
c:\WINNT\Sysvol\Staging area
c:\WINNT\Sysvol\Sysvol ( and all subfolders.) That is why I don't have
SYSVOL and NETLOGON shares.

Check the article: "The Sysvol and Netlogon Shares Are Missing After
You Restore a Domain Controller from Backup"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316790

Unfortunately the solustoin in this article does not help me.

Does someone know about this problem? Can someone help me find a
solution?

Thanks in advance,

Dean

If you need a copy of production in a test lab it is far easier to move the
machine to the lab and seize the roles and configure DNS and then perform a
metdata cleanup of it in production domain.

Thanks for your quick response Mark and Robert. Mark, I have a
question for you. How is the folder
"DO_NOT_REMOVE_NtFrs_PreInstall_Directory" created under Sysvol\domain
folder? And what is its role? Will be created automatically when a DC
is promoted? Does it have to, or must, lives under Sysvol\domain
folder for file replication services?

thanks,

Dean

The DO NOT REMOVE folder is created automatically during the dcpromo
process. The folder is for inbound replication. I suppose if there is only
one DC in the domain, then it would need to exist in a test environment.
