Missing system32 file

My son's computer recently would not boot sying that it could not find the file c:\windows\system\system32. It said to reinsert the Winxp disk and hit the 'R' key when asked. (I know this means to restore the OS)

After the restore it added users. While this is not a big deal all the programs under the original user name are still in the computer and my son wants to access the programs without reloading all of them.

How do I bring all of his shortcuts, favorites, programs, etc into the new user name. I tried to use the old user name and have the OS recognize the programs but that is not working.

Can anyone help me, before I go through this painstaking task of reinstalling all of the pointers to the software already installed?

Hi,

He will need to reinstall the software under the new installation, there is
no workaround for that. He will not be able to load the old profiles on the
new installation.

By the way, the presence of system32.exe in that folder indicates that he
was indected with a virus.
