Missing system tray icons ,XP

Windows xp home edition,
I notice sometimes the icons in the system tray (right side) that should be
there do not appear.
On rebooting they sometimes appear sometimes not ,Even though they are all
clicked to appear in the tray,
My Linksys network icon is the one i have the most trouble with ,Followed by
Norton and logitech at a 3rd place.
Anybody noticed this,???? Will be happy for any solutions,, Jonny
 
I've found a couple of things that affect this. The simplest one is that your system tray has the "Hide inactive icons" box checked. To fix this put your cursor in the taskbar and right click. Go to properties. You should get a window that has the taskbar and start menu properties. Find the "hide inactive icons" box and uncheck it.

More complicated: Many of the programs have a similar box in their "properties" that allow you to show, or not show, the icon in the system tray. You'll have to go through all of the programs to see if that is the problem. I had that problem with my network connection (which isn't working right anyway! :) )

Jonny,

you are not alone. You already got some good advice. If that
doesn't solve your problems, you may have the same affliction
that I have along with a small subset of the user community.

Usually it helps to log off from your computer, then log on
again. No need to reboot, and rebooting is also less successful.

Some people report that disabling the UPnP and SSDP services
solves the problem, but in my case that's not possible because I
need those services. Perhaps you can do it.

The problem is currently not widely recognized. I have found
only a few sources reporting it.
