recently, from some unexpected reason, one of my computers running xp pro started not booting and read "missing windows/system32/config/system". Not too tough right? but when i boot up with the boot up disks and the xp cd, after choosing repair and choosing 1 for c:\windows and pressing enter, the system freezes without even prompting for the admin pass. Reading over the microsoft help thread, it says that there is a possibility that the account management system may have been corrupted too. So is there another way to get to the recovery console or to repair the system file without reinstalling or reverting to a system restore point?

Hi Brian,

To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is mising or corrupt" where
Xp wont boot:

Go to Recovery Console and type:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit

um... well I understand that it can be fixed by the Recovery Console, but I can't even get to the Recovery Console; it freezes before asking me for the administrator password to access the Recovery Console.

By the way, the link to the "Recovery Console fix for SP1" is broken; there is no file there. and yes, I do have SP1 installed.

Also, im pretty sure i cant even reinstall windows - it freezes when "searching for previous windows installations"
