Trying to fix a friends PC running XP Home.
Set up network card to connect to my home network (for hi -speed internet
access) (was not previously configured as they only had dial up).
Installed Zone alarm.
Updated virus definitions (AVG anti virus installed) + scanned all hard
disks with no viruses located (this time).
Ran windows update and installed 16 critical updates including SP1.
When I rebooted the PC, there are very few entries under the 'Start' menu
and all the program entries under the 'Programs' menu are missing.
Any ideas?
Martin.
P.S. sorry if this appears as a repeat post, my newsserver has trashed all
articles for 4 hours from the time I last sent this.

OK, I fixed the problem; somehow all the folders in 'documents and settings'
had become hidden (I don't know why); I changed the attribute turning
'hidden' off and now all the programs are back. I swear that I didn't change
this attribute myself, so I don't know how this happened.
Martin.
