been asked to look at a friends computer who in turn was looking at it for
someone else. he thought it was a hard drive failure. However fitting a
new one and the windows setup states that it can't copy certain files
error at line 1069 sif.sys or somesuch.

Tried hard disk in a different system and used same cd and installed fine.
Of course once transferred to the original system it won't finish booting
into windows gets so far and restarts. tried a repair installation from
the cd and 'cannot copy file ' perhaps the cd is faulty. 15 or twenty files
like that. retry and skip etc and again system won't quite finish booting.
Any suggestions?

If the CD is OK, I've seen that with dodgy RAM. If there's two DIMMS in
it, try it with each one in on their own.

sif.sys seems to be related to TV.
Has it got a TV tuner or summat in the machine ?.
Win setup is telling you it can`t find the files or drivers for something !.
So you`ll have to remove that device, to install windows.
Then sort that problem afterwards.

I don't believe so. The only peripheral is the modem everything else is
built into the board.
