Missing Security tab despite turning off Simple File Sharing

I've lost the Security tab I should see when I right click a folder and click
Sharing and Security. I've tried going through Tools, Folder Options, View,
and then unchecking the Use simple file sharing box. But still no security
tab!
I've done this repeatedly, switching it back and forth. No dice. I've
rebooted repeatedly, still nothing. I've tried system restore back to a
point in time when I think everything worked, and it tells that nothing has
actually changed, so there's nothing to restore.
One other weird thing, the Sharing tab I do get has nothing on it about
sharing anything on the local computer, there are only controls for a network
share, including how many users are allowed. This doesn't match any textbook
I have, and I don't know where it's coming from.
One final bit of weirdness, for several hours I've been unable to to access
this newsgroup's editor to post this message. I'm doing it now from an old
Windows 98 machine with no problem whatsoever, over the exact same
connection. I've also had Internet Explorer suddenly tell me that the page I
want isn't available offline, that I should use my dial-up connection. I'd
go out to the command prompt, Ping something like yahoo.com, that would work
fine, and then the browser would settle down and recognize the proper
connection to the local gateway and DSL modem.

Any ideas? I've spent hours searching Knowledge Base, and I just keeping
getting the same old crap about turning off simple file sharing. HELP!
 
Besides clearing the checkmark for Use simple file sharing [Recommended] in
Folder Options...

The sharing tab is not visible if you are logged on to a machine with an
account that does not have adequate rights.

The sharing option is not available for the Documents and Settings, Program
Files, and WINDOWS system folders. In addition, you cannot share folders in
other user's profiles.

Also. . .
The Sharing tab is not visible....
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Server service |
Set Startup type to: Automatic | Click Apply | Click the Start button |
When it has started, click OK

If you do not see the Server service..........
This will restore the Server Service (lanmanserver).

Open Network Connections, click Start, point to Settings, click Control
Panel, and then double-click Network Connections. | Right click Your
Connection | Properties | General tab | Install button | Highlight: Service
| Add button | Highlight: File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks |
OK | Close

Check settings here...

Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |
Navigate to...
Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\
Remove the Security tab
Set to Not Configured or Disabled.

Remove the Security tab

If you enable this setting, users opening the Properties dialog box for all
file system objects, including folders, files, shortcuts, and drives, will
not be able to access the Security tab. As a result, users will be able to
neither change the security settings nor view a list of all users that have

Thanks for responding, the information you provided is good to know.

Turns out that wasn't the actual problem. I'm a little embarrassed to say
this, but I didn't set up this laptop, I won it in a charity raffle two years
ago. Because it came with XP already loaded, all this time I just assumed
the drive was NTFS. It wasn't!! When I converted it, the problem was gone.
Still, I wonder why it would switch to the File Sharing disabled sharing tab
for that setting if it couldn't execute it. I would have thought that that
setting wouldn't even appear under Tools, Options, View if XP couldn't use
it. That's what really had me stumped.

I could kick myself for not checking the file system sooner. <grin>

Tried all this and still did not work for me.

Domain admin could not see security tab.

Remove PC from domain and join workgroup
Delete Administrator.domain account
Rejoin domain

Voila!

Hi to all members of this group.

I had also this problem with a windows xp pro computer at my company.
I was making a revision of the security policies in the computers of
my work group (even I am not a software expert but a simple user) and
I found that that computer had the simple file sharing allowed. Then I
began with the procedure to not allow simple file sharing and to have
visible the security tab. I don´t want to extend my explanation of all
the tricks I used but only to say that I read everything in the
Internet about the topic, including the suggestions in this group, and
I applied all of them. I spent about four entire days to solve the
problem. The results were frustrating because I did'n obtain the same
results for equal procedures. I changed the forceguest from 1 to 0 in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa, unchecked the
"use simple file sharing" box both in My computer and in the Control
Panel "folder options", examined the currrentversion policies,
disabled and abled the guest account, rebooted in safe mode and made
the changes, etc. Well, usually, the procedure didn't work, the
security tab continued to be missing, the "use simple file sharing"
box checked, and the forceguest returned to 1. Sometimes I was able to
see for a few seconds the security tab and to make changes in it but
quickly it disappeared. Simetimes even I was able for a few seconds to
connect with a shared folder from another computer with my own
account. Once I maintained opened the My computer and the "folder
options" in the Control Panel with the "use simple file sharing" box
unchecked as well as the forceguest=0 in the Lsa of the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and everything worked well. As soon as I closed one
of them the problem continued.

Then I used another computer without this problem in my work group as
a reference for configuration and began to put the bad one with the
same configuration as the good one. Deinstalled programmes, nothing
happened, eliminated the non-coincident programmes in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run,
nothing happened, coppied the security directives configuration,
nothing happened, turned off the non coincident programs in the
startup and services with msconfig, nothing happened.

Then I had an idea. If all the question is that the forceguest in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
retuns to the 1 value each time we put the value 0, what would
happened if we put another different value from 0 and 1? I know all
the recommendations about changes in the Register of windows but after
so many hours trying to solve the problem I didn't go to abandon
without finding a solution. Then I put 2. The system warned but I
didn' care. The 2 was admitted by the system. The security tab has
returned and the "use simple file sharing" box was unchecked. I could
make changes, etc. But this only lasted a few seconds and number 2
returned to be 1. So, I thought, -we are just as in the beginning-.
Then, I said to myself, if number 2 was admitted by the system, other
numbers different from 0 an 1 will be also admitted. I was thinking
even in putting big numbers in case the numbers had something to do
with the time the system responded to the changing configuration. Then
I put the value 3, et voilá, the system worked properly.

After one day, the security tab continues to be there, the "use simple
file sharing" box continues to be unchecked, I can connect from
another computer to the share folders I put in the "bad" computer,
and, more amazing, the number 3 continues to be in the forceguest
setting.

I don't know if the number 3 in the change of the forceguest setting
is the only reason fo the system responding to my request of changing
the file sharing setting, or if it is that together with all the
changes in the startup and services in msconfig, because these changes
are still there, and I don't want to try the luck making more changes.

My opinion is that Windows responded in a vicious circle with number 0
and 1 and that this circle was broken putting a different number than
0 and 1. So, any other number different from 0 and 1 could be also
valid.

I wanted to make this information known because, even I am not a
habitual user of these groups, this thread was around in the Internet
for many months or years without a satisfactory answer.
