Missing registry information

I upgraded my Dell dimension 4300 from Win Me to XP ( better later than
never).
Some programs did not work and needed to be reinstalled. After reinstalling
Microsoft Office Word a window " Missing Registry Information" opens with a
message : Required registry information is missing and this application can
not run. Please rerun setup to correct the problem" . Rerunning setup does
not correct the problem and I do not have any idea what registry information
is missing.
I will appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Hi MikeA,

See if the following MSKB article is applicable (you didn't mention which
version of Office you installed):

You receive a "Required registry information is missing and this application
cannot run" error message when you start an Office 2000 program

Regards,

Thank you.
It is Office 2000.
I went thru all 10 steps of Q236590 but step 11 does not work. When I open
Word no dialog box appears - rather the old message and Word or Excel shuts
down.
I also found Q 236592 and went thru the steps there. When I select ("tick")
" Replace permission entries ..." and click APPLY, the selection (tick)
disappears.
However searching through Google I came across something about missing
"data1.msi". I have no idea what it is but Search of my hard disc says no
such file found. Search of my installation CD disc shows this file as
present. If I do need it, how to install it? Does need to be in the
registry? If yes, howto do it?.

I will appreciate further help.

You're welcome :-)
Sorry I didn't respond sooner than this, but I've been too busy the past few
days to visit the newsgroups.
I was thinking that, perhaps, someone who frequents the Office-related
newsgroups might be able to help you better than I. If you haven't done so
already, you could try posting your question at microsoft.public.office or
microsoft.public.office.misc
