Missing *.PST files solution found

I just upgraded to a new mobo, chip, memory, HD, and tried to keep some of my
older programs. What a nightmare!!!

One thing I was thoroughly "annoyed " off about was the fact that Vista does
not like the wab*.dll files that came with the Office 2000 Outlook. I thought
I lost all my contacts and messages. That was sooo annoying considering that
I faithfully backed them up before the transfer to Vista

After 90 minutes on the phone with someone in Banglore, India, we came to an
easy, free fix, the best kind.

1) Download the trial version of MS Outlook, and install. Do not enter
product code when prompted. You get 25 free trial uses before it no longer
works.

2) The new Outlook will be in the Microsoft Office sub directory, click on
it to start.

3) Enter your pop 3 and SMTP data as if you were making a new use for the
program, for you are.

4) Locate where your old *.pst files are, and tell Outlook

5) Import them to Outlook.

5) Keep Outlook open, and open Microsoft Mail

6) Do the same step (3) and (4) above FOR mail.

7) Download and use Thunderbird. I did.

Hope that helps!

Warning: this post is way off base. Any notion that Outlook ever used wab
files is completely wrong, as is the notion that you should ever import PST
files.

If you want to use Outlook 2000 on Vista, install it in Corporate/Workgroup
mode.

and then export it to vista mail - its much more secure than outlook 2000.

I know how insecure Outlook 2000 is. :)

SORRY FOR CONFUSION

Since I have the entire Office 2000 suite, I glossed over some of the
difficulties that I have with Word, also, and focused on the error message
that I got whenever I tried to use Outlook.

The fact remains, that I could not get Outlook to display any addresses, and
messages; consequently all other Office applications were also affected by
the error message saying that the Wab32.DLL and another file was missing.

With all due respect to Russ, and others, I did a total backup of the
Outlook files, and then tried to import them into the installed Outlook files
from where I placed them on the CD. Not finding any solution to that here,
nor anywhere else on the Net, does give me justifiable annoyance that a
format that Microsoft created is so unique that it takes as many steps as I
went through to get the problem resolved.

Is it my fault that I quoted the exact error message? No.

Actually one "helpful" MS tech told me I needed to buy a NEW copy of
Outlook, or the entire Office suite, or else, I was out of luck. Therein lies
my frustration, and being justifiably "annoyed off" at Microsoft for all this
unnecessary hassle.

My rant is over for the day. Nevertheless, I still recommend using
Thunderbird.

Two mistakes described in this paragraph. The first is that you can't
import from a PST on a CD. The PST must be on a read/write medium like the
hard drive and must not have the read-only attribute set (which files on a
CD will have). Second, importing is NEVER the way to add data from a PST.
In many (most?) cases, it will corrupt the existing mail profile.
