Missing or inactive search facility

I have XP on my amchine and for some reason the search
facility is non existant. If I open an explorer search is
in the toolbar but doesnt work. I understand that there is
a regitry edit to fix this. Could someone who has had the
same problem or knows the answer please assist me.
