missing or corrupt hal.dll after bios update

i have just successfully update the bios of my Asus A7N8X
deluxe motherboard, but on reboot Windows gave an error
saying that the "hal.dll" file was either missing or
corrupt, i cannot envisage how this has happened and i
just assume that XP thinks that the machine has been
changed (due to the bios update) and therefore won't boot

i'm sure that there is a workaround for this issue i
appreciate any help anyone can give me
