Suddenly, when I right-click on the Desktop the only options under New
are new Folder and Shortcut. There is not even the choice of a new Text
file!

I am running Win2000 with SP4 and all the latest patches. Computer is a
laptop with 512 MG RAM and 17GB of free space on the hard drive.

What happens if you logon as a new user? (create a new account in 'Users and
Passwords').

The same thing: just 'New Folder' and 'Shortcut' are present, nothing
else. I created a new user called 'Test_User' with Administator
privileges to do this test.

Sounds like at least the \default user hive is corrupt. You might ponder
what's been done recently to the machine. Can you copy from a like machine?

Thank you for your reply.

I am the only user. Nothing noteworthy has been done. On Saturday a new
program was installed but the problem did not exist after the new
installation. I have up-to-date anti-virus etc. (Kaspersky). This
problem just happened this morning. I have shut down and rebooted quite
a few times and nothing has changed. I have no access to a similar machine.

Does this problem likely cause others? So far as I can tell, the machine
is otherwise working normally.

These might help.

You have given me what I need to fix this, I think. I had suspected that
I would be reinstalling Win2000 (yet again).
