Missing ntfs.sys file, and not accepting admin password in repair

When I start my computer I get an error that I am missing
System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys. I then boot my computer from the windows xp setup
cd and enter repair mode. It then prompts me for my administrator's password.
I enter the password but it tells me the password is invalid. I am positive
that this is the correct password. I recently installed service pack 2 and am
not sure if the computer has booted up correctly since or if this has
anything to do with the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi

If you are trying to 'Repair' XP, you could be hitting 'R' at the wrong
time. Press Enter at the first screen, follow the onscreen prompts and
press 'R' the second time it appears.

Thanks to your advice I have made some progress. My computer now makes it to
the Microsoft XP boot screen. However, after the boot screen finishes loading
a black screen appears and nothing happens. The screen just remains black.

Hi

Can you access Safe Mode and try a System Restore back to a point before the
problem started?

No. When I try rebooting in safe mode (or safe mode with command prompt), it
lists many files and then freezes on that screen. The last file it lists is:
multi(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys

How do you know you don't have a hardware problem ? Most probably the disk,
but maybe the power supply or anything else.
