I have a client with a laptop running Windows XP Pro SP1. He was
complaining that he is not able to access his network drives. Upon
inspecting his system I see that the Net Logon service is not only not
running, it's missing from the Services Control panel all together! I'm
seeing in the Application Event Log some of the following:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1053
Date: 12/11/2003
Time: 4:34:48 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: ELLIOT2
Description:
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The authentication
service is unknown. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: AutoEnrollment
Event Category: None
Event ID: 15
Date: 12/11/2003
Time: 4:35:50 PM
User: N/A
Computer: ELLIOT2
Description:
Automatic certificate enrollment for local system failed to contact the
active directory (0x80072095). A directory service error has occurred.
Enrollment will not be performed.

And from the System Log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7003
Date: 12/11/2003
Time: 4:43:09 PM
User: N/A
Computer: ELLIOT2
Description:
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service depends on the following
nonexistent service: LanmanWorkstation

I am not able to remove the computer account from the domain by way of the
System Control panel applet as the buttons to perform these actions are
greyed out with a message at the bottom of the window which states:
"Note: The identification of the computer cannot be changed
because: -Networking is not installed or it is not properly configured."

I'm quite puzzled by this, does anyone out there have any ideas?

Thanks,
Rob McCulley
