Missing Music Files

I am using an external HD (Maxtor) to store my music
files. I am not sure what happened but at some pount more
than 1/2 the files are missing when I access the drive
directly or through software such as Feurio or Nero. When
I use Media Player 9, I can see and use the files. When I
run a search command under Explorer, the files cannot be
found. Please help.
