I need help. Accidently moved the 'favourite' folder into another folder and
currently it is now on my desktop menu. At any time i want to go to my
'favourite' tab to view most visited website, it turn out to be blank. Please
help. Im using XP Pro sp2, IE ver 6.

Hi Nurena :-)

Have you restarted the machine yet? If so, then Windows should have created
a new Favorites folder. You can run a Search and find out if the Favorites
folder has been recreated. If so, then copy the links from the folder on
your desktop into the new folder and see if they show up properly. Be sure
to make a backup copy of the desktop folder, just in case.

If the Favorites copied into the new Favorites folder work alright, then you
should be able to delete the one on your desktop.

Hope this helps :-)

Dear Jan, thanks for yr reply. Yes, i've restarted my ntbook and follow yr
advice. But still when i do my search, nothing just the same. Whenever i
click to favourite tab at the toolbar > add to favourite or > organize
favourite, it doesnt do anything and when i click my 'favourite' button, the
left collumn appear but i can still see the sign [x] on top right. Sometimes
it will appear 'search' column or 'history' colum whenver i click the
'favourite' button. A friend of mine suggested to uninstall IE completely and
re-install it back. But im scared i might loose all the valuable document,
file n folders in my ntbook. FYI, im using Panasonic Tough Ntbook and hv

Hi Nurena :-)

Ok...it appears that you will need to repair IE in order to reset the files.
Make sure that you make a copy of the Favorites that you have the desktop
Then do a repair of the IE according to the following:

First, disable your AV:

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start>Run and type
cmd to get the command prompt,
then type in "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes, and notice the space
between the c and the /.)

Have your XP CD handy and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it
takes a while. This will do the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP and a
lot more, that is find any corrupt system files and replace them. It
does not, however, re-register the various software components (except
possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

If that does not work, then try the following:

Simplest repair for XPsp2 is

If that's not enough there are additional registrations given
in KB831429 for W2K which apply equally to XP. (e.g. NT5x)

Be sure to visit Windows Update site and let it scan for all needed updates
and service packs afterward.

Hi Nurena :-)

Have you restarted the machine yet? If so, then Windows
should have created a new Favorites folder.

Jan,

That's what happens if certain system folders get *deleted*.
In this case I suspect that by moving Favorites Nurena has actually
changed the registry setting for Favorites in Shell Folders,
to her Desktop.

Assuming the Favorites folder exists on the Desktop
the simplest fix would be to reverse the process and
open up either an Explorer window or a Folders bar
and drag Favorites back to where she wants it.
That should update the Shell Folders value in the registry
and thus make copying individual Favorites files (.URL)
unnecessary. Some such updating can be deferred to
the next boot in which case there would be warning messages
about file being in use.

Alternatively she could use RegEdit to change the location.
I'm not sure whether just changing the location there is enough
to generate a new (empty) folder or not. It might even be interesting
to see what just deleting the Favorites value name would do.
That could conceivably regenerate both the value and the folder
in the original default location.

With a RegEdit solution, as you indicated, the folder on the Desktop
would be disassociated from the Favorites menu and she would have
to copy any .URL files she wanted to keep to the new active folder.

Here's a reference for the RegEdit solution. Apparently there may
be more than one value which would need changing with that technique:

<title>KB167124 - Favorites Entries Lost During Internet Explorer Installation</title>

The drag and move solution should update all applicable registry
values automatically.

I see...thank you very much for the information. It is good to know there
are alternatives when other methods fail. :-)

Dear Jan & Robert (hello to Alan), a friend forward me this in my email this
morning. He had the same situation earlier.. I followed by having him talking
with me on the fone and it work well.. Thank you for all the assistence given
to me and i will come back to check/learn all the valuable message posted in
this discussion website. Good work ppl!

Internet Explorer Favorites are missing/empty

When you click the Favorites menu in Internet Explorer, all of your favorite
URLs may be missing. This might happen if the Favorites Shell Folder is set
incorrectly. Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

For Windows 9x Systems

[HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders]

In the right-pane, set the Favorites path to C:\Windows\Favorites

For Windows XP

[HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders]

Set the Favorites path to %USERPROFILE%\Favorites

The above should be a REG_EXPAND_SZ value, not REG_SZ

The Favorites Shell Folders path reverts back ?

Sometimes, the Shell Folders path for Favorites may revert to the previous
setting. To prevent that, read below:

Checkpoints:

If you've only altered the "Shell Folders" value, it usually reverts back
(in accordance to the User Shell Folders value). You need to alter the
Favorites path in User Shell Folders key.

If you're using an environmental variable such as "%Userprofile%", you need
to create a REG_EXPAND_SZ value type, rather than REG_SZ. Also, note that
REG_EXPAND_SZ type can accept either formats.

Disable any browser / favorites management software provided by your ISP and
reset the Shell Folders as above. If it does not help, see if the *.URL files
exists in the hard drive by doing a file search. They may be present in a
different folder. Example.. Earthlink's software...Courtesy of MS-MVP Alan
Edwards.
