Hi,

I've just installed Windows XP in a dual boot scenario, one copy is fine but
the second is missing the icons that are nornmally present on the left (my
computer, my documents etc.) . I've tried repairing Windows from the CD,
going back with system restore, and copying some the icons from the start
menu, this has missing properties on my computer and no Network Places

I'm now stuck, how can I get all of the icons back?

Graham

Hi, Graham.

Just to be sure...you DO have the two copies in different volumes, don't
you? Installing two copies in the same volume (primary partition or logical
drive in an extended partition) is a no-no.

Try this. Control Panel>Display>Desktop tab>Customize Desktop... bar in
lower-left. In next box, are those items checkmarked ? If not, mark wanted
ones and see if restored. I removed Network as I don't have need for it.

Hi, Graham.

Dual-booting should work fine - so long as the System Partition (almost
always Drive C:) is formatted FAT32. This is true even if WinME is on D:.
If WinME is on C: and WinXP on D:, then D: may be formatted either FAT32 or
NTFS, but WinME won't be able to even see D: if it is NTFS. You apparently
have already passed all these potential roadblocks. ;<)

But that doesn't explain the missing icons at all. Malvern's solution
should work. You should be aware, too, that WinXP tries to start with a
very clean Desktop - no icon except the Recycle Bin, by default. Maybe it
ain't broke. ;^}

I have just had a problem with a corrupted XP and have the same problem.
Performed a Repair which did not work.
So ran install over the top.
That did not solve the problem so I performed a new install which you would
expect to fix the problem.
No luck still the same.
The only icon on the desk top is the Recycle icon.
Does not appear to be broken, just missing icons.
Do not known how to get them back.
Any one had the same and solved it?
