Missing Icon in My Computer folder

I have been experiencing missing icons of my both CDROM
(Sony) and CDRW(Plextor)in My Computer folder as well as
Device Manager page a while after turning my PC on. The
HDD Activity Led keeps blinking as if trying to locate the
drives.

Anybody out there have the same fenomena and any remedy
for this please? Occasionally after rebooting, both drives
will appear on POST but more often the BIOS also try to
detect them.

You might have a bad drive attached to that IDE cable. My wife's computer had a
bad drive and whenever you would open Explorer, it would try and read the
contents of the disk. It would appear to hang the computer for a while but
would finally come back and show nothing was inside even if there was a disk.
Other times the computer would boot a little slower as the drives would not
promptly report themselves back to BIOS during POST (I set it to Auto identify
during each boot).
