Just built a new unit...turned on today....all seems ok except, after
formatting the new hard drive - a Western Digital 320GB, its appeared as
only 127GB!
Any ideas how this could have happened and anything I can do to get the
full size back?

Yep, you dont have 48 bit LBA support enabled.
and anything I can do to get the full size back?

The detail varys with the OS.

With XP you basically need to have SP2 installed.

In theory you need 48 bit LBA support in the
bios too, but thats not absolutely essential.

Gets more messy if you arent using XP.

Two things your system needs to support hard drives larger then 137GB (which
is 127GB after Partitioning/Formating)
Your motherboard bios needs to support 48-bit, which should be in any bios
from dated from 2004 or late 2003
Windows XP did not support partitions larger then 137GB until service pack
2.
Use Western Digital lifeguard tools before installing Windows XP.

Need to use the Western digital lifeguard software on the drive before
installing Windows XP

Patch windows to the current patchlevel. It has a broken IDE driver
that can only do 127GB.

He may have formatted the whole drive.
And Windows XP may just need Service pack 2 to see the whole drive.

Update to Service Pack 2, then use Partition Magic to extend the
partition.

Thanks for all the help...finally sorted...

....for info as per...:-

Downloaded XP SP2

Accessed Disk Management in Windows XP..... Right-click on My Computer,
left-click on Manage,
and then left-click on Disk Management....click unallocated space, and then
New Partition Wizard...
and on to formatting...so now have a couple of large (ok...too large really
but what the heck) partitions. :-)
Thanks again.
