Missing General Tab in Tools

Carl

For some strange reason, when I right click the IE icon,
and select properties, the "General" tab is now missing,
making it impossible to set my home page, or, delete the
temp files.

This occurs when I log on to the machine locally, if I
log on to the domain, it is ok. The machine is running XO
Pro, with SP1.

Anyone have an idea what may have happened?

Dear Carl,

Thank you for your post.

Based on my research, this problem may occur when the "Disable the General
Page" group policy is enabled. When this group policy is enabled, the
General tab is removed from the interface in the "Internet Options" dialog
box.

Let us perform the following steps to check this group policy:

1. Type "gpedit.msc" in the Run box to launch Group Policy.
2. Check whether the following group policy is enabled. If so, please
disable this policy.

User Configuration\Administrative Template\Windows Components\Internet
Explorer\Disable the General page

Does it work now? If this issue continues, please check the following
registry value and ensure the following registry value is 0:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control
Panel\GeneralTab]

If anything is unclear, please feel free to post back.

Dear Carl,

Thank you for your update. I am glad that this problem was resolved
successfully.

When you enable the "Disable the General Tab" group policy, the system just
adds the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Control Panel\GeneralTab] registry value and sets it to 1. When
you click the "Internet Options" menu item, IE will check whether this
registry value is 1. If it is 1, the General tab will not be displayed.

This is to say, if some third party applications add this registry value
you will experience this issue. It is not required that you modify the
group policy through the user interface.

I hope that the above information can be of assistance.

Hi Carl - This has been showing up a lot lately and seems to be caused by
some malware called CoolWebSearch. Do the following:
Download and run: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip to
remove the parasite

Then download and run:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/iegentabs.reg to restore your
tabs and remove any restrictions that the parasite has put in place.

Even though you've already made a (partial ?) fix, you won't do any harm
running either of these.

Reset the Internet Explorer tabs and remove all the browser restrictions.
Download the script from:

Remove IE Restrictions & Restore Missing tabs
http://www.angelfire.com/dragon/sramesh2k/reg/IE_reset_restrictions.reg

Also, refer Fix 268 from Kelly's site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Restore All tabs in IE and Removes the ** Internet Options ** Restrictions
as well

** The cause may be due to a spyware. Download Ad-Aware from
www.lavasoftusa.com, scan the system and eliminate the malware products.
Re-apply the above fix if necessary.
