Hi I'm not sure what I have done but the left hand pane in which shows the
list of folders (inbox, sent, deleted etc) in windows mail has completely
disappeared.

I have tried rebooting, I have tried going into layout and making sure the
folder list is checked but it will just not come back. They folders are
still there as I can get to them through the folder bar option. If I uncheck
the folders list box the folder bar shows a drop done menu with the folders.
but if it is checked I can't get to them through that way and the navigation
pane doesn't appear.

What has happened?? Please help!

You may already have found the answer, but I was looking for help on another
issue and have your answer. On your tool bar at the top that starts with
"create mail" look all the way to the right and click on that icon. It hides
or shows your local folders.

thanks but that isn't working, its enabling a drop down list that shows the
folders but the left hand side pane that stays there all the time is just not
coming back I really don't understand what has happened. Could I have
deleted it??

Do you see anything in the left pane, such as "Local Folders"?
Do you see the vertical line that separates the left pane from the other panes?
If so, does moving that vertical separator line do anything?

No this is the problem the left hand pane is completely missing, I have tried
moving the left line but it only controls the line connected to the actual
windows mail window and that is the only line that is visible. Its like its
been deleted but could I have done that without realising (if at all!) The
folders are there they are visable through the folder bar drop down list but
the folder list check box is not working to bring the left hand pane back
(its not doing anything)... I'm stumped!

Thank you for finding the answer I needed too. I just hope I've not done any
other changes unknowingly. Mimi

Are you talking about for your Contacts? There's "Organize" on the top
toolbar when you open your contacts . . . . .
Otherwise try clicking the ? and type in Organize in the search bar for
various info . . . . .

If you're talking about Contacts, read on:
If the toolbar in Contacts doesn't have its normal icons such as
'Organize', then the folder type for Contacts is incorrect. To fix it:
Open Windows Contacts. Right-click somewhere in that
empty white space to the far right. Select Customize This Folder,
click the little triangle, and from the dropdown list select Contacts,
then click OK.

You threw us off-track by mentioning 'Organize', which has
nothing to do with mail folders.

Normally that problem would be fixed by going to View, Layout,
and selecting Folder List (not Folder Bar).
If that doesn't fix yours, then you have a third party security
program that is interfering with writes to the registry. Changes
you make in settings can't be saved unless they are written to
the registry.

In that case she contributed to the misunderstanding by failing
to quote what transpired previously in this thread. :-(
I hide previously read messages by default.

I have the same problem as smartlady. For no reason at all my folder list on the left has disappeared. I have tried view>layout but then have a problem as one of the boxes that isn't ticked is Info Pane. When I tried to tick it in the hope of solving my problem as soon as the cursor gets close to it it changes to a ticked box and the words are Search Bar. I've had every Windows incarnation since '95 but Vista has caused more headaches than any other. I considered reverting to XP but didn't want to be defeated, I wish I'd done it now.

I have the same problem but the suggestion does not work. I hose to view the
folders from the layout but still cannot see them. Did I hide the list of
folders somehow. They used to be displayed on the left edge of the page.

Is anything visible on the far left? Sometimes that vertical divider line
gets moved way over to the left.

If no improvement, which antivirus are you running? Some of them
cause problems with Windows Mail over time.
