Dave

I have been having problems with my computer latley.
Files that were there one minute are dissapering the
next. Programs are ok one day then an error message will
tell me that there are files missing or invalid path's.
I have scanned with norton to no avail, everything is
fine. I tried to open msconfig in the run window and it
said that it was missing, how can it be? The computer is
fairly new (<6 Mths) with good spec. I also have
broadband. I have also tried system restore and it says
that it cannot restore, there are restore points but no
joy. Anyone with any idea please help as this is doing
my head in. Thanks. Dave

First, make sure you antivirus software has the latest definitions and then
scan your system.

Second, are you running any utilities that "cleanup" the hard drive and/or
registry? If yes, that application could be the culprit.

Third, such symptoms can also be a sign the hard drive is failing. This can
happen even on a relatively new system such as yours. Check the hard drive
manufacturer's web site for their diagnostic tools. You may need to check
your system documentation for the manufacturer of the Hard drive. Go to
their web site, download their diagnostic tools and make note of their
instructions for creating and running their tools disk. Then run a
diagnostic on your hard drive. Most such diagnostics can determine if a
drive is failing. NOTE: chkdsk will not do this and is not as thorough as
these tools.

Forget the mfg web site for tools,xp wouldnt need them
even if they existed.
Try going to run, type:cmd At the curser type:
Sfc /Scannow
When the graph starts install xp cd,exit info page. When
the graph is thru,remove cd,then type:CHKDSK C: /R
C: being youre hd,then type:EXIT Restart computer.
Sfc is windows file chk,and replacer(if needed) CHKDSK
will repair the hd.

Absolutely incorrect.

Scannow and chkdisk will not determine if the controller is going bad,
chkdisk surface scan is not deep enough or robust enough and it often misses
problems the Hard Drive tools from the manufacturer are designed to find.
Also, most new hard drives enable S.M.A.R.T, a self-monitoring and analysis
tool, http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/, that the Hard Drive manufacturer
tools are designed to check. Neither chkdsk nor scannow can handle that
function. Further, such test need to be run outside of the Windows
environment, these tools disks are bootable and designed to work outside of
Windows even on an NTFS partition.
