After a hardware problem I had to reinstall XP Pro SP1 from scratch but during the installation a number of files were missing (or couldn't be read from the CD).

The system seems fully functional but I'd like to correct things if poss.

I have a note of all of the 16 missing files. The main grouping seem to be java files, first one was clspack.exe.

Anyone aware if I can repair this problem?

Hi,

PC usually has problem reading files from damaged (e.g. scratched) CDs. If
possible try installing from new CD medium.

Mike

clspack.exe for one is often amongst a group deleted by a some trojans.
For example, - c:\WINDOWS\ASD.EXE, CLEANMGR.EXE , CLSPACK.EXE, CONTROL.EXE,
CVTAPLOG.EXE, DEFRAG.EXE , EMM386.EXE
Possibly that's why you had to reinstall SP1.

Have you run a full virus scan?

Thanks Mike, unfortunately I don't have another CD available though

Hi John

I did run a full Norton scan after installation which came up clean.

It sounds as if you are missing the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Go here and
get it: http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Greetings --

Are you sure that you've completely resolved your hardware
problem?

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation
are most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order
of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On
much less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also
cause this.
