missing drives

My CD and DVD drives have disappeared. First, I cannot believe that XP allows those icons(drives) to be deleted and second, I cannot believe there isn't better trouble shooting to correct this

How do I get the use of these drives restored

I am having the same problem. It is not deleted (just
missing from the device manager), and I agree that the
support for the missing drives is horrible. I have yet to
fix the problem on a more perminant basis. You can always
restart the computer to bring them back, but I have no,
more convenient, way of figuring it out. If I find
something, I'll let you know!

I have tired this and it appears to have worked. It was

"I had the same problem only yesterday and I followed the
following advice: Go to www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm and
find and dowload the cdgone.zip download. Follow the
instructions in the 'readme' file that will be extracted
with the download, and your drives should re-appear in no
time! Good luck
