Missing drivers for USB devices?

During the past few months my machine (running XP Home with SR2) seems
to have forgotten where to look for USB device drivers.

When I plug a new USB device, say a simple memory key, my machine
seems to have forgotten where to look for drivers. It reports that it
can't find a driver. If I go to the custom mode and tell it to look
for the driver in c:\windows\inf it finds it immediately.

I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me how to return things to the time
when it could find the drivers automatically.

Roger, you could try rt clicking MyComputer>select
Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>USB Controllers. Rt click on
each one and choose Uninstall. Disconnect all USB Devices before you do
this. Restart and let WinXP reload them.

Thanks for the advice Rich, sadly it has made no difference.

After Uninstalling the devices and rebooting I had to tell the system
to look in c:\windows\inf for the USB Device drivers before they could
be reloaded.

Then eventually when I added the original USB devices they too
couldn't find suitable drivers until I suggested that the system
looked in c:\windows\inf.

windows\inf seems to be in the right place but I do wonder if it has
been moved or something. Alternatively I wonder if there is a register
entry that tells the system to look in the right folder (inf ),
perhaps this has become corupted.

Anyway many thanks for your help and I wonder if you or anyone else
has any further ideas.

Thanks,

Roger

Roger, rt click MyComputer>select Manage>select Services. See if Plug and
Play is started.

Hi again Ricjh,

I appreciate all your help.

I did as you suggested and "Plug and Play" is 'started' and is listsed
as automatic.
