Im using w2k sp4 in our DC who acts as DNS and DHCP
server as well. After 2 years of operations, I
encountered problem related to DNS, particularly to those
clients who are using windows 98. All of the users use
logon script that automatically maps shared drives, those
who uses windows 98 hangs when mapping the drives only to
find out that their host names no longer exist in the DNS
server, so what I did was to input each and every
computer name with their corresponding ip address
manually. What possibly caused the problem and how can I
be able to address it?

thanks.

Not sure why all your host names don't exist. Usually just following the
basic steps will insure that all machines will be registered in DNS, such
as:

1. Point ONLY to your internal DNS on DCs and Clients' IP properties. Check
your DHCP scope option 006 to insure that only your internal DNS address is
the only one in the DNS list.

2. In DHCP properties, DNS tab, force DHCP to update DNS for clients that do
not support this feature, such as Win98 clients. This will insure that
Win98, MAC , JetDirect print servers and Unix/Linux clients get registered.

3. In IP properties (on W2k, W2k3 and XP machines), advanced tab, DNS tab,
insure that "register this connection" checkbox at the bottom is checked.

Now if you are also saying that the domain SRV records are also missing,
(such as the _tcp, _sites, _msdcs and _udp folders), then I would say there
is a deeper issue going on. If this is also your case, is your AD DNS domain
name a single label name (such as "DOMAIN" instead of "domain.com" format)?
If so, SP4 stopped registeration updates for single label names.
