I've seen the previous posts to this question but no valid
answers, I'd like to find the solution. The only way I
could get the "real" Outlook icon to stay on the desktop
was to install O2K first then upgrade to O2K3...This isn't
a very convenient work-around. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,
Ryan

OK, this works for me, now you try it...

- click on Start
- click on Run
- type "regedit" ... press OK.
- browse to the following location in the registry:
-- HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
- right-click on "NameSpace" and click New->Key
- name the key to the following:
{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
- double-click on the "(Default)" registry key (right panel) and change the
value to "3"
- close the registry.
- reboot the computer.
- there should now be an OL icon on the desktop.

OPTIONAL:
===========
- to add a specific warning message when the OL icon is deleted, do the
following:
- right-click on the {GUID} registry key created above and click
New->String Value.
- name the key as "Removal Message"
- double-click on the "Removal Message" key and set the value to the
following:
"The Outlook Desktop icon provides special functionality and we
recommend that you do not remove it."

That fix did show the Icon on the desktop, now I receive
memory error messages when I right-click.
- The instruction at "0x77f71ae6" referenced memory
at "0x9e543471". The memory could not be "read".

Click OK to Terminate the program

Explorer.EXE - Application Error
- The exception unknown software exception (0xc015000f)
occurred in the application at location 0x77f6fafb. Click
on OK to terminate the program

That error should go away after a restart.
