Missing D Drive

Somehow I encountered a problem when I viewed a web page. To be able
to download a PDF, I had to temporarily disable any anti-virus programs
which might conflict with the download. This left my machine very
exposed and vulnerable; however, I was able to view the PDF. I forgot
to re-activate the virus programs and suddenly, my Dell, windows XP
Desktop locked up and I held down the on/off button to turn the
computer off.

After that, I could connect to the internet, but I got the "blank page"
and nothing I tried worked. So, I used the reinstallation disc to
reinstall Microsoft Internet Browser and that failed to. I tried
resetting all tool option to default. Nothing worked. So, I made a
backup of all important files and decided to completely reinstall
windows XP from my disc. Now, my system doesn't recognize a D drive.

How can I maybe bypass the normal startup and reinstall windows.
Everything I tried failed and it would take too much writing to tell
you all that I've tried.

I'm going to take a wild guess that D: is your CD-ROM and you're trying
to boot from it with your Windows install or recovery disk. (if not you need
to post more information).

To boot from the CD you may have to change the boot order in the BIOS
setup program. To enter the BIOS, you have to press a specific key
when you first power on during the POST. Most common is probably
"Del", but it could be something else. Look for a message
at the beginning of the boot process telling you what key to press.

Once in the BIOS, look for something relating to "boot options/order".
Put the CD-ROM drive at the top of the boot order list. Save your
changes and exit.

Why in the hell would you have to disable them to download a .pdf?
That sounds like something else sneaked in with it.
