Hi, I have read about all the problems regarding the above and the fixes -
unfortunately for me none of them correspond. I have no dvd/cd in device
manager, Mycomputer or recognised by any of the burning software. But it's
there cos I can see it. I do not know when I lost it due to infrequent use of
it. Can anyone help? I have a compaq presario v4000 - the HP people have told
me that I need to re-install my OS. If this is the only way, then due to my
lack of tech knowhow - can you help with instructions to do this without
losing everything? The computer is 8 months old. I would really prefer an
easier fix than this! Any ideas would be welcome. Thank you.

Your software is an issue that requires you to go to thier website.
But basically and for windows purposes of recognizing the drive:
stick a cd or dvd in it and see what happens.
If nothing go to admin tools, computer management and "explore" the device,
if listed.
If you see not removable devices or other entries pointing to the drive,
check
out your cmos/bios settings. Don't know what all options you may have
inthere,
but you should be able to set that device as the bootable one.....

PS: The people at hp/compaq don't know how to fix nothing on their machines,
thats why they always say, "you need to reinstall the o.s."

PSS: I myself, don't know nothing about their machines, so check your manual
or their
website for the suggestions I provided above....
