Have an HP Pavilion, P4, 1.6Ghz, 512MB RAM, HP cd writer
(16-8-40) and 16x Toshiba DVD, Windows XP Home
(preinstalled). Have had this computer almost a year now
with no problems. A week ago everything was fine; went
on vacation and now both media drives are missing from My
Computer. In Device Manager, both have the yellow
exclamation icon and both show the following error:

"Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this
hardware. (Code 37.)"

I've uninstalled the drivers, clicked "Scan for hardware
changes" to reinstall or upgrade the driver. It locates
the "new hardware" and I then get a message "Problem
occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware
may not work property." I've done "Troubleshoot," with
no results. I've searched the MS Knowledge Base, as well
as Google newsgroups, but haven't had much luck there
either

Any assistance would be appreciated.

This is a very weird situation, I would have thought that
your IDE cable may have possibly come loose. It doesn't
seem that way. Have you tried uninstalling those devices,
shutting down, then unplugging the IDE cable and boot
windows without them hooked up at all. Then reconnect and
boot into windows again.

Have you fooled with the ASPI drivers at all?

Im not sure if that will work, but it will narrow down
your problem a little bit.

Thanks for the fast response. I've solved the problem, although I still
don't know why it occurred. I found the following forum (can't say now how
I found it -- have been doing a lot of searching today), and, even though
everyone was talking about a Code 39 error (rather than a Code 37), I
decided to try it. It worked! My drives are back. I don't even use EZ CD
Creator (I've used Nero Burning ROM from day one). Even so, I've made no
changes or updates to the software since installation (why mess with it when
it works) and anyway I can't figure out why all of a sudden this would
happen--it's a mystery!
