Terry,
This may seem like a red herring, and may be. But the place to start may be
to look at video and driver issues.
First, you should make sure you have the latest version of DirectX. That
may not help your current problem, but it is a wise security move. WARNING:
If you have Windows 2000, you MUST have all Service Patches for Win2K in
place before doing this (Courtesy of Austin Myers).
Second, you should try adjusting hardware acceleration:

Third, update your video drivers. They are the interface between you program
and what you see:
