Cherie

i am running xp professional and can't locate the backup
utility. ntbackup.exe is not anywhere on the drive. i
checked the xp installation cd and it is not in the
valueadd\msft directory (that's where it is for xp home
edition). There is \I386\NTBACKUP.EX_ and
\I386\NTBACKUP.HL_ on the installation cd. Any
suggestions on how to get this installed?

Hi Cherie,

Booting to the Recovery Console and then expanding those files to the
C:\Windows\System32 directory might help. If you're unfamiliar with Recovery
Console, have a look at this MSKB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=314058

The commands you need to key in would be like so:

expand <CDROM drive letter>:\i386\NTBACKUP.EX_ C:\Windows\System32
<ENTER>

expand <CDROM drive letter>:\i386\NTBACKUP.HL_ C:\Windows\System32
<ENTER>
