I have lost the "Backgrounds" tab in the control panel - display area. Now
I'm stuck with a bright blue background and can't seem to get rid of it, even
when I right click on a photo and pick "Save as Background". Can someone
suggest a remedy?

Thanks

When you go into Control Panel, if it's set to Category view --- you should be seeing "Appearance and Themes" listed.
Once that's selected, you should see "Change the desktop background".
In the Display properties window, do you see the "Desktop" tab. If so, click on it.

In the Display Properties window I only have two tabs: Settings and Screen
Saver, no Desktop or Backrounds tabs. I think some Malware may have something
to do with the missing tabs as I noticed them missing after I used Titanium
antivirus to clean my computer. Is it possible that the tabs or the option to
change the appearance was deleted by malware or viruses?

Are you logged in as Administrator?

Yes it is possible. Did Titanium say it found anything?

This happened on my uncle's computer. I'm not sure how it can be fixed
as I ended up having to format the pc as internet access ground to a
halt because of the virus (and I was over a thousand km from home).

I think it was Klez but I'm not sure. I managed to get Spybot installed
and updated and it found it, said it had cleaned it but hadn't - I tried
several times. At this point the ability to go to sites on the internet
that would have been of help failed totally and the whole pc became that
slow it was no longer feasible to keep trying.

My aunt and uncle had an antivirus programme installed but didn't know
you had to pay each year to update it :(

I'm not saying this is your problem, just that it is possible in my
experience.

yes, there were 3 or 4 viruses before I ran Titanium and according to the
software all were disinfected. I would not like to reformat the hard drive as
everything else is running great.

Thanks

Google "free virus scan" and take your pick of websites for up to date
verification of whether you have caught all the viruses.

I purchased Panda Titanium 2005 and ran it shortly after the problem occured.
It disinfected 3 or 4 viruses and notified me that the drives were free of
viruses. I've done this operation again a few times since and appearantly the
viruses and spyware have been clean since the first time. Any other
suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I did a "System Restore" to the date of purchase and that brought back all
the options in Display....back to normal. Now I just need to set up everthing
like I had it. I'll be sure to keep the anti-virus program up to date!

Thanks to all!
