My friends and I are having problems using MS-Outlook. We
all have Windows XP Home and either Outlook 2000 or
Outlook 2003 (XP). When I sent email with picture (.jpg)
attachments to my friends, some of them receive the
attachments and some do not. All of us live in the same
metro-area and all of us use the same internet provider,
Road Runner broadband. We have all looked at our security
settings within Outlook as well as our individual firewall
and anti-virus software and everything seems to be ok.
The really confusing part is that it seems to be a random
thing - two out of four people in an email will receive
the attachments, then in another email two or three
different people will recieve the attachments. I have
tried both opening up an email and attaching the files and
right clicking on the file(s) and choosing "Mail to
Recipient".

Can anyone help with this?

Sorry, one more detail...the .jpg attachment files turn
into .dat files and are unreadable for the recipients who
cannot view the attachments.

Also, this happens ALL THE TIME when I sent .jpg
attachments to my friend who use AOL dial-up.

Hi Ryan,

The key clue here to your problem is that sometimes these are coming over
as .DAT files. This happens all the time when the sender sends the email
in Microsoft's proprietary Rich Text Format. This format is most commonly
used when you're using Word as your e-mail editor. Some ISP's mail servers
sometimes strip the RTF data and then tries to re-package the packets,
resulting in a .dat file being passed on to the receipient.

Try sending the e-mails in plain-text or HTML format and see if things
improve - I think they will....
