When you run the Uninstaller on an application (Control Panel, etc.)
does it go back and delete the original download as well as the
installation itself? I've had some of both EXE's and ZIP's just vanish
from a directory I set up for new downloads and named "Newdown."

Also one ZIP file of some 260K turned into a 1K file at some point, I
don't know if during installation or deinstallation. Now I'm starting
to make backups of archives in separate directories when I download
something.

Well, according to your sig, all you have to do is destroy your system and
then kill anyone near you.

Neither installing or uninstalling touches the original downloaded setup
files. If you are losing files or finding them corrupt, look elsewhere for
an explanation. If this happened on my system, checking for viruses and
failing hardware would be the direction that I would head.

Backup is always good and those backups should definitely include setup
files for applications that were purchased and downloaded from an online
source.

GAK! but thanks.

Urk, I made a CD of all my setup archives minutes before I downloaded
the ones I lost.... Meaning, of course, the ones I lost were the only
ones I hadn't saved.

Thanks

Jim, if these were purchased programs
-and access to the downloads is limited
-and if you still have confirmations of the purchases (in email or a hard
copy that you printed out) contact the respective customer service
departments for anything else you need.

Usually email or web page confirmations contain enough information (order
number, invoice number and/or serial numbers) that the companies will help
you to obtain another copy of the software.

On the other hand - if the downloads are accessible, download them again
(make a backup) and install. If you need to contact customer service for
another copy of your serial number, do so.

For free software, just download the programs again.
