I recently upgraded from xp to xp pro and ran all the
suggested update from microsoft and suddenly I can no
longer find my Soyo 6.1 avi card reader in my computer. I
found an article in the knowledge base (318623) that
sounds very similar to my problem and am wondering if
there may be other causes for this issue as MS doesn't
have a publicly accesable fix for this problem. Prior to
upgrading, and actually after upgrading to xp-pro it was
working and was showing up under my computer as six
removable drives. Since running update's until there were
no more to do it is gone. Thanks for any help. Eric

Don't feel like you're an isolated case! I have a brand
new Bayone (with front USB and Firewire in addition to
the card reader) attached to an Intel D865PERLK
motherboard. Every time I cold boot the machine I have
to open the case and unplug the USB for the card reader
and plug it back in. If I don't it shows up as
an "Unknown Device". Afterwards, it uses the Microsoft
USBSTOR.SYS driver! Soyo was no help, just dumb
suggestions including, well return it to where you bought
it for exchange - as if the second one will be any
different. BTW, it shows up as a removable device, not a
permanent one like my ATI Remote Antenna. I suspect it
is because the INF file treats it as generic and it has
default behaviors. What is maddening is that after the
cable dance, all is well.
