Misbehaving Mouse!

Can anyone help? The mouse suddenly gets a mind of its own when using IE5
in Win2000. It responds with random movement when I try to position the
cursor. I have reinstalled the MS Intellimaouse drivers, but no difference.

H E L P !!

First, take apart the mouse bottom. Wash the ball and then use a small
knife to scrape the crud off the rollers.

Thanks for this. However, the problem is more fundamental. The mouse uses
any movement I make as an excuse to move any way it wants! At random!

Any other ideas, please?

Perhaps a little more information?

- mouse type (optical, ball etc)?
- connection (wired, wireless, ps2, usb)?
- happens with certain programs/all programs
- if you have a second system can you swap the mouse and see if the
problem follows?

Right!
It's a MS Intellimouse 1.2A PS/2 Compatible
Ball, PS2
Happens most predictably when I click the pull-down arrow on the IExplorer
Address Bar
I have tried another mouse and get the same effect. It's weird - the cursor
can continue in it's direction even if I reverse the movement of the mouse!
If I try to get out of the program or close Windows 2000 the cursor moves
across the screen at random while I move the mouse, "clearing" a small
square 'window' as it goes, revealing the desktop.

If it *only* happens in IE it would suggest some kind of setup/driver
problem. If it's other programs as well, it could be either driver or
hardware. (You kind of intimate that other programs might be affected
without coming right out and saying so).

If it happens with a second mouse it probably rules out the mouse itself
(you could verify that by trying the original mouse on a second system).
However, it could still be a wiring/connector problem particularly if
you are using an extension cable.

I would also try re-installing the mouse driver (or delete the mouse
from device manager then reboot - using the keyboard - and let Windows
redetect the mouse).

Thanks.
I tried this but got no improvement.
I previously updated the mouse drivers in the hope that that would fix it,
but no success.
What's the best way to reinstall IExplorer?

Best ask one of the MVPs here, that's non-trivial as I recall. I don't
think you can simply uninstall it and then reinstall.
