Hi,

WinXP Home.

Due to an increased number of disk read errors I purchased a new drive and
Ghosted the old disk onto the new disk.

The computer now boots nicely and Windows starts normally first with the XP
logo on black background and then the default blue win background with logo.
However the disk activity stops just before displaying the user list. Same
problem when running in Safe mode.

What can cause this? Any clue to where I should check / test?

Thanks for any hints ;-)

regards

I suspect that your ghosting effort did not result in a true
carbon copy. Or perhaps you booted the machine with
both the original and the ghosted disk connected at the
same time.

Well I did the operation twice and it produced the same result. Formerly I
have done this a hundred of different times with no problem.

I was merely looking for help on how to find out WHY windows stops exactly
where it does. Which options do I have other than bootlog...?

No, BTDT some years ago ;-)

If this was my machine then I would examine its event log
via a networked machine. I would also try to log on by
pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice in sequence in order to force
the classic logon screen to appear. Lastly I would repost
the item in the correct newsgroup. You're in a Win2000
newsgroup!
