Hi all

Just got a New Scan Elite 5400 from Jessops, when I first connected the
scanner WIN XP detected it and installed the drivers OK, but the green LED
keeps flashing, it will not initialize, is their anyway to perform a reset
on this scanner.

Thanks

PS I have just removed the case to see if their was anything obvious and
found a Pen and a Pencil inside, I suspect this is not a new scanner anyone
had any problems like this before with Minolta.

Thanks

Whoops!!

You have just encountered Catch-22 of the Sale of Goods Act. :-(

"The scanner doesn't work because of foreign objects inside it and I
want a replacement."
"How do you know it has foreign objects inside it?"
"By opening it up to look."
"Opening the scanner invalidates the warranty, we are not obliged to
replace products that have been tampered with."
I suspect this is not a new scanner anyone
had any problems like this before with Minolta.

Probably not, but Jessops have had several well publicised problems
selling used or demo stock as new.

Kids are notorious for "posting" objects in slots - it could have just
as easily been a piece of toast or a letter to Santa! ;-)

Did you read the manuals? The Pen and Pencil are key components of this
scanner, and must not be removed.

Do it all the time. Its fairly standard to say "yes it may be on display
but i only put it there this morning". If you have three sets of display
shelves then you may end up displaying the same product three times to make
sure people see the product outside or inside and on either side of the
shop. Only problem is 3 is the most likely number of any item in stock.
Its also been the case that (although i have only seen one manager do it)
certain manufacturers will offer promotions such as buy a camera and get the
printer at half price. However, if the offer isn't displayed and only the
sales til informs you of this then charge the full price.

You screwed up! You did not read the manual before trying to use the
scanner.

If you had read the Startup manual, you would have found out that you do not
connect the scanner to USB until all of the Minolta software is installed.

After installing all the scanner software from the CD, then you connect the
scanner and XP will load the correct driver.

What XP tried to install is the WIA driver which does not work with your
scanner.

Now you must go and remove all signs of the wrong driver.

Start by opening Device Manager and with the scanner connected and turned
on, remove the Scanner device. Disconnect scanner, reboot, install the
Scanner software from the CD, reboot. Connect the scanner and then maybe XP
will find and install the correct software.

As for the pen and pencil, you may be correct, that is either a factory
screw up or somebody is deliberately causing damage to that scanner.

I bought a 5400 from Jessops last summer. Last December it went wrong,
error50... Back to Jessops where it was noted that the serial number was
different from the serial number on the box. This was found as they told me
that the box was not required and were taking the carefully packed scanner
from the box. A week later the scanner was returned, collected and plugged
in only to find Error50 still in residence. Back to Jessops. Phoning from
a car park near their store they asked me not to bring in the box just the
scanner, so I carefully removed it and walked the 50 yards to the shop.
Weeks later many phone calls and a letter arrives telling me that the
scanner was "beyond economic repair" and "damage to the case due to
mistreatment falls outside the t&c of the warranty" but if sir would like to
buy a new one at a special price of 360GBP they'd be only too pleased to
sell me one.
The red mist descended.
Finally talked to a Jessops lady with a bit of sense and eventually a "new"
one was despatched to the shop. They were unable to supply one from stock
which left me puzzled but I've now scanned a further 500+ slides so all
appears to be well, thus far.....
I have just bought a Canon 20D, lenses, timer, memory and a FujiE550... but
definately not from Jessops..... indeed the angst they caused me makes me
feel it's worth paying extra to purchase locally, in the event the shop
matched the best web price I could find and they verified, even throwing in
a gig card and a few other useful bits which left me very happy.
Cheers

Hi

Actually I didn't screw up as I already had the Drivers on my PC as I also
have a working Multiscan Pro attached and that use's the same drivers as the
5400.

I took the scanner back today and got a replacement, this one works fine on
the USB2 connection but not on the firewire. I think I will call Minolta
tech on Monday.

As far as Trading Standards are concerned, there is a substantial
difference between the terms "display" and "demonstration". The former
can be sold "as new", although most reputable dealers would offer a
display discount, the latter cannot.

Jessops have been in court several times in recent years, and lost, for
selling "demonstration" stock as new.

And analysts question why their share price has plummeted so much after
they floated last year! Some punters are even suggesting they are worth
buying now - having dropped 60% when their abysmal trading results were
published. Your experience, repeated by thousands of customers, is
*why* they had abysmal results!

I do that all the time, but using the Net. You can find lots of good,
quality suppliers, who are fairly local. Personally, I've used Park
Cameras a lot. They're really helpful - you can do all the buying on
their web site and they're helpful both by mail and on the phone. If
you don't see anything you want or want advice just talk to them.

I've got no connection to them other than as a very satisfied
photographer :)

The ID for the Scan Elite would be different, so you still need to install
the correct driver for the Scan Elite 5400.
Each scanner, even identical models must have a separate driver installed in
Windows XP.
And you can not have two USB scanners powered and connected at the same
time.

Hi

So why is it that's how it worked with the second scanner, I just plugged
it in and away it went, well on the USB anyway, and I can have both scanners
on and when I start the TWAIN software a dialog box opens asking which
scanner I want to use.

more importantly there is a problem with people abusing the 30 day money
back. The idea is that if you bought it as a gift the recipient may not
open it straight away. Many people have used the item for weeks and then
brought it back. There is one guy who used to buy a camcorder on a friday
and bring it back on a monday. He did this so often that we banned him.
Problem is that under these circumstances the machine is boxed back up and
sold as new.

That is why most companies now have a clause in their return policy that
the item must be unopened for a full refund.

Just by coincidence I happened to be in Curries only yesterday when some
twat was trying to spring the same con and the staff were explaining to
them that it was illegal for them to now sell the DVD player that they
were returning as new, so if the item was not faulty they could not
provide a full refund and showing exactly where in the sales paperwork
this was written.

Seconded. Park have always had a good mail service, even long before
the net existed. I was using them in the 70's for mail order, but now I
live a lot closer, whilst not exactly local, they are just a short
detour from routes I commonly use on other business.
