Minolta dimage XT / SD card reader problems

I have recently purchased a Minolta dimage Xt digital camera. According to the manual, windows XP does not require any drivers, and should automatically list this as a removable drive after connecting it to the USB port.
For some reason, my windows XP does not do this, but instead starts the "add new hardware wizard", which always fails to install the device properly.

To get around this, I bought myself an SD card reader. Same problem here... according to the manual, XP should list it as a removable drive zithout the need for drivers. Again, windows XP starts the wizard and fails to install it properly.

Any suggestions?

Interestingly, both devices work fine on a friend's
laptop (windows XP as well) - the problem seems to be
with my laptop... is it a software or hardware problem
though?

This may be one for rec.photo.digital as there are likely people who have had the same problem. Of course if they haven't then you're still screwed :O)
