Minolta 5400 Scanner -- where to buy?

Hi,
In a few weeks, my planned scanner upgrade time will happen
(birthday gift from my wife) and I think I've settled on the
Minolta 5400 as the best in its price class
(I mostly do slides, rarely print film). I just received my
profiling slides (and print) from Germany to do that part "right".

There are a few places with prices too low off the average to
think they're anything but refurb or 'b'-goods at best. And there
are a few selling above what I think is the list price (why?).
Default
reliable sources like B&H are around $650, while the lower prices
group down from there to just a little under $600.

My current thought is Amazon who sells it for about $600 with
their free shipping. Has anybody bought one from them? If
you did, did you suspect it was b-goods or any other oddity in the
purchase? Did you try using their 30-day return policy that seems to
apply to the unit?

Alternatively, any other suggestions before I go ahead with it (in
a couple
weeks from now)?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

P.S. - I'm in the U.S.

Amazon seems to have "fixed" things for me the day I post
the question. Their price went up $50 the instant I asked about
it. :-)

Probably back to my default of B&H (at the same price).

P.S. - I wonder if it's possible if Amazon has different prices on
different links. I may have found the lower price indirectly
through the zillion price-comparison sites I've looked through,
or some such... but I neglected to save the URL not thinking
they'd have different prices. But then, it may have been on sale
and my timing is real bad. :-)

I've run across a sudden price differential on a couple of occasions.

Try eBay - I bought mine there.

For spendy things bought new for which I value a return policy
and mfgr warantees, I prefer sticking to a "regular" web store
(often for eBay purchases I have no receipt, which doesn't help
with warantee proof-of-purchase dates, etc). I went ahead
and ordered it from B&H last night, it should arrive before my
birthday (by about a week and a half :-).

Thanks for the thought though, and it appears you're happy with
your eBay bought 5400, and that's a good sign. There have been
some people who have had trouble with theirs, but on B&H's site
they have it tagged as a top-seller, so it must work for some
people. Hopefully for me next week. :-)

Mike

P.S. - Not that I have any problem buying eBay, my personal rating is over
300 there.... :-)
