I am having a problem tracing what seems to be a virus on my laptop, I have
Norton Anti virus software but this does not pick up any virises and have
zone alarm that keeps telling me spoolsv.exe wants to try and connect to the
internet.

My main problem is that my mouse seems to have a mind of it's own and moves
around the screen occasionally opening browsers windows and outlook express.

I have tried getting zone alarm to request every program that wants to
access the internet and a program that is giving me real concert the 'Common
Client CC App' as in zone alarm it seems to show a hand on the icon, as if
it is sharing this file and presumably it's services.

I then opened task manager to view the process running and have 58 running,
which seems to be a lot of programs when I am simply at my desktop with no
programs running, aside from the task bar items of which total 15.

If anyone can advis the of a way in which I can decide waht is needed and
what is not I would be most grateful.

Also, if anyone knows of a tool that will show me what traffic is going out
of the my laptop

Many thanks
Phil Jones

Post a list of what is running in task manager, it would
help to see the exe's running. Not sure why spoolsvc would
need access to inet but probably is no harm.

Thanks for the advice guys, but the problem has turned out to be a corupt
touch pad file.

Simple update of the driver has solved the problem

Thanks again

Thanks for posting back. I guess it is too easy to suspect virus/malware for all
unusual problems these days. --- Steve

Reported in a prior posting as solved. (this note for anyone coming into
the thread late)

If you are looking for security recommendations, try the guides
published by the National Security Agency. (Yes, *that* NSA.)

I don't agree with all of the recommendations (especially for a
non-government site), but they can serve as a starting point for
negotiations between your IT staff, your security staff, and your users.

There are several very good commercial products such as EtherPeek (with
prices to match...) but for many applications you can get what you want
with the freeware Ethereal sniffer. See
