Minimizing won't work right

The minimizing feature on my XP Home Edition does not work correctly.

First I must say that I am not very wise with computers and if I say
something dumb please bear with me.

Assume that with my Windows XP Home Edition I bring up the website
http://www.snopes.com and I have it on my desktop. If I now click on the
minus sign (-) in the upper right of the desktop it will minimize it to the
taskbar at the bottom of my desktop and if I click on it while it’s shown
down in the taskbar the webpage will reappear on the desktop.

Now, I decide I would like to look at the website
http://www.truthorfiction.com. If I have the snopes webpage minimized in the
taskbar and then bring up the truthorfiction webpage, the snopes site in my
taskbar disappears.

However, with the Windows XP Professional Edition I have at work, if I
minimize the snopes webpage to the taskbar and then bring up the
truthorfiction webpage, the snopes item in the taskbar stays there and does
not disappear like it does in my home XP Edition and if I click on it, the
snopes webpage will replace the truthorfiction webpage on my desktop. I
would like very much for my home computer to work like this.

I hope I’ve explained it clearly and like I said earlier, I don't know if
the professional edition of XP is intentionally able to work like this and
the home edition isn't.

What do you think?

Thanks much for any information or help you can give me.

Are you clicking a hyperlink in an email to open the truthorfiction site? In
Internet Explorer, uncheck the box for Reuse windows for launching shortcuts

Kathleen,

I'm not clicking a hyperlink in an email. The box for "Reuse windows for
launching shortcuts" is already unchecked. Also, the line reads "Reuse
windows for launching shortcuts (when tabbed browser is off). I don't know
if the remark about tabbed browser is important or not since I don't know
what a "tabbed browser" is. Sorry.

Thank you for your reply.

I am

What browser are you using at work?
What browser are you using at home (sounds like IE7 or IE8)?

A tabbed browser such as IE7 will open pages in the same browser window,
but with separate tabs for each link. Click on one tab - the snopes page
is there, click on the other tab and see truthorfiction. The button on the
task bar will show which tab is *currently* open.

With no tabs - IE6 or IE7 with tabs disabled, opening different pages in
the way you are (and you have not said *how* you are opening pages, so I am
guessing...) each page will open in a different browser window, with
different buttons on the task bar.

To make your IE version work the same way as your work's copy, disable
tabbed browsing in Tools->Internet Options and click on Tabbed Browser
settings.

If you are not clicking a hyperlink to bring up the truthorfiction site,
then how are you bringing it up?

Kathleen,

Sorry I took so long to get back to you.

I don't know if it's the right way to do it or not but if I want
truthoffiction, I have an icon on my desktop for Google which I click on.
The Google webpage comes up and I delete the google address and type in
www.truthorfiction.com, click enter and the truthorfiction webpage comes up.

Again, I not savy about computers and this works okay for me.

Thanks for trying to help me.

Ron,

It worked !!

I did it and the problem is solved. I thought I described my problem
clearly at the start (I wanted my Home version to work the same way as my
work's copy) and what you said above was the exact answer to what I had
described. I've been trying to find the solution forever with everyone in
the world offering advice and solutions.

Thank you, thank you.
