when i play games in win xp the computer restarts in the
middle of the game and an error report comes up with a
minidump file

To stop this behavior go to Control Panel / System / Advanced /
Click the Startup and Recovery Settings button / Uncheck the box
labelled "Automatically restart" under the System Failure section.

To analyse the error, try the steps in: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

If the error indicates a file name that begins with ati, or nv (nVidia)
the most likely solution would be to install the latest drivers using
the instructions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers

When i make the changes in the Advanced tab and go and
play the game it freezes and wont respond

Dean,

If for some reason updating your Drivers as Jimmy Suggested does not work
for you I would be happy to take a look at the minidumps you mentioned.
Minidumps can be located at c:\windows\minidump attach the ~5 most recent
dumps to a mail and sent them to (e-mail address removed). After analyzing the
minidumps I should be able to direct you towards the driver, or possibly
hardware causing the crashes. I hope to not hear from you as Jimmy has a
great track record on the MS message boards :)

i just did a directx diag and it says i have Direct x 8.1
that could be the problem but ill get back to ya thanks
