I shut my PC down last thing at night. as far as I can see it is not on
Standby. When I get up in the morning it's back on again. We have no fairies
and\or ghosts that I am aware of.

Can anyone help as the main switch is virtually inaccessible so I can't
keep switching it off at the mains.

Turn Wake-On-LAN off in the BIOS.

Check settings in BIOS for "wake" settings: Wake On Ring, Wake on LAN, etc.
Disable them.

The opportunity to access the BIOS configuration menus occurs right after
the computer is booted and before Windows starts to load.

If your OEM has not placed a splash screen here, you'll see "Press <name of
a key> to enter Setup." Which key gets pressed varies from one system to
another. If you do not see such a statement displayed, check the system
documentation for directions.
