Hey there.

What is the minimal hardware performance index for Vista RTM to enable
Aero interface?

I ran Aero with a score of 2, I don't think the score determines if you can
or can't run Aero.

Yup - score 2 says: "PCs will run Windows Vista but in most cases will
not be Aero capable."

So there are cases when a PC with score of 2 will run Aero.

Runs fine on a overall of 2.0 (dragged down by FX5200 graphics = 2.0)

My score is 2.0 and I'm running Aero. Initially I was at 1.0 with a cheap
and old Nvidia card (don't even remember what it was but it was a good 3+
years old.) and I could not run Aero. Bought an nVidia GeForcde 6200OC and
it only upped my score to 2.0 but it is now running Aero pretty well and I
am pleased with it.

My other scores are:
Processor 3.7
RAM 4.2
Graphics 2.0
Gaming Graphics 2.5
Hard disk 5.2

I'm not a hardcore gamer but what other cards will bump up my graphics
scores without breaking the bank?

That's correct. You cannot use the "Overall" performance score to determine Aero capability. The overall score will be whatever the lowest number of the 5 hardware items. You could have a processor with a score of 1.9 and a high-end graphics card with a score of 5.2, which would make your overall score a 1.9. This system would still run Aero easily.

FYI, I am running Vista with a 2.5 base score. And while it might operate a
bit faster with a higher base score, I'm getting all the 3D features and a
quite respectable operating speed right now.
